The trade industry is a vital part of the Australian economy, employing millions of workers across the country. However, the industry can be physically demanding, stressful, and challenging, which can take a toll on workers’ mental health. It’s important to recognize that mental health is just as important as physical health, and that seeking support and practicing self-care are essential for maintaining overall well-being.
Sadly, the trade industry has a higher than average rate of suicide. According to a study by the Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention, male construction workers in Australia are twice as likely to die by suicide than other men in the country.
The report also found that construction workers aged 15-24 had the highest rate of suicide of any occupation in the country, with a rate of 35.8 suicides per 100,000 workers.
These statistics highlight the need for greater awareness of mental health issues within the Australian trade industry, and the importance of taking steps to address these issues. Here are some tips for promoting mental health and self-care within the trade industry:
- Prioritize self-care: Taking care of yourself is essential for maintaining good mental health. This can include getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, staying physically active, and taking breaks when needed.
- Seek support: If you’re struggling with your mental health, don’t be afraid to reach out for help. Talk to a friend, family member, or mental health professional. There are also many resources available specifically for the trade industry, such as the Mates in Construction program and the Support after Suicide program.
- Reduce stigma: Unfortunately, there is still a stigma around mental health issues in many industries, including the trade industry. By speaking openly about mental health and encouraging others to seek support when needed, we can help reduce this stigma and promote a more supportive work environment.
- Provide training: Employers can play a key role in promoting mental health within the trade industry by providing training and resources for their workers. This can include training on recognizing the signs of mental health issues, as well as resources for seeking support.
By prioritizing mental health and promoting self-care and support within the Australian trade industry, we can help reduce the high rates of suicide and promote a healthier, more resilient workforce. Let’s work together to break the stigma around mental health and promote greater well-being for all tradespeople in Australia.
